⚠️The Theater of the Oppressed is in danger⚠️
In 2025, the Théâtre de l'Opprimé (Theater of the Oppressed) suffered the complete withdrawal of its annual operating grant of €38,000, awarded by the DRAC Île-de-France (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) since its opening in 1996. This withdrawal creates a significant deficit in the theater's finances and directly threatens its survival.
In 2025, we made every effort to address this deficit by reducing our operating costs while simultaneously trying to increase our own revenue. Among the measures taken, we had to make the difficult decision not to renew two positions, reducing the permanent staff to three employees.
Despite the contraction of our resources, we have managed to maintain a rich and varied activity, welcoming more than 30 companies and more than 7000 spectators, an increase of almost 40% compared to 2024.
Our decentralized activities within the social field (prisons, disadvantaged neighborhoods, schools, universities, care centers, etc.) have greatly contributed to maintaining the existence of the place open to the public.
In 2026, the Theater of the Oppressed celebrates its 30th anniversary, yet its future is more uncertain than ever. Our reorganization efforts are insufficient to guarantee the theatre's financial stability, which remains extremely fragile.
Will our hall, which was completely renovated in 2022 with the support of the City of Paris, the DRAC and the Île-de-France Region, be closed in 2026?
With the support of the artists, our audiences, our institutional and cultural partners, we are today requesting the reinstatement of this vital operating grant, without which the theater will be forced to close its doors in the near future.
